About The Harman House
Hi friends!
Our names are Sydney and Jacob. Originally we are from Indiana and Illinois. We got married in 2018, and have settled in a south suburb of Chicago. You could say we are just your typical midwesterners.
Jacob is the woodworker at our shop. He learned many of his skills under his dad’s teaching and YouTube. By day he’s a triathlete, engineer, and great husband!
I am the calligrapher, painter, and occasional helper in the workshop. During the day I teach Bible for 6th-10th graders at a school. I’m a self-professed coffee addict and lover of guacamole.
We both love spending our time hiking, kayaking, and really doing anything outdoors. What we love more than travel and outdoor activities is our little pooch, Bosco. Bosco is our favorite model and beloved goldendoodle pup.
Our vision
“Combining what we love with who we love to bring your design dreams to life“
We love making wood signs and decor. Our journey with our small business started in 2018. While Jacob and I were planning our wedding, we wanted to add our own personal touches, but we had a limited wedding budget. So, we combined our skills.
Thus Harman House was born! After our wedding we started having friends and family ask us for wood signs. It was then that we decided to launch our site. Since then we have expanded to numerous states and have created many signs, decor, and more.
Many of the orders we take are custom. So if you don’t see something that’s just right for you on the store, please contact us! We would love to take your vision and bring it to life.
Our Process
Gather Materials
We are frequent flyers of Menards. We almost need our own loyalty program titled the everyday visitors. We also source many of our hardwood pieces, specifically walnut, from a local miller
build
After we get our materials, we haul them back to our workshop. There we cut, sand, stain, paint, and much more. Sometimes it feels like we spend more time in our basement workshop than we do the rest of the house.
Letter & finish
The last step looks different depending on what our project is! If it is a wood sign, after Jacob and cut and assembled it, I letter it! Well first, I work up a mock up, then I pencil it on, and finally permanently pen it on. Sometimes I letter by and other time’s I’ll use a stencil to guide it. This depends completely on what the customer has chosen.
Pack & ship
Finally, once an item is complete we pack it up and ship it. Before we pack it up, we like to take a picture. We often stage many of our peices for our social media. We love to share with others what is happening at our store!
